SREL's research programs, capabilities, and expertise entering the new millenium:

Below:
Two models for SREL research programs supported by UGA beginning in July, 2008

(in both models the research programs and associated expertise have been dramatically reduced compared to pre-2006 levels; most programs have disappeared; environmental genetics and extremophile microbiology move to the Athens campus; some nanotechnology research is likely to continue with the Savannah River National Laboratory).

A. SREL retains a modicum of analytical capability and expertise in order to carry out SRS task needs related to environmental contaminants. However, no programs remain that focus primarily on ecological risk. Wetland ecology (including plant ecology, waterfowl research, and stream fish studies) and herpetology are the primary field-based programs left.

B. SREL becomes primarily a "field ecology" laboratory, with little internal environmental chemistry expertise. Note the total lack of research related to ecological risk and the minimal focus on environmental health.
