The Save SREL web site is being updated to reflect the current situation at the lab. Please return at a later date for updated information.

Briefly, SREL's doors remain open, but many research programs have been greatly diminished or eliminated. By July 2008 the SREL staff will be 1/5th to 1/10th its size in 2002-2003. The number of research programs operated from the SREL laboratory will drop from approximately 25 to fewer than 10, and more likely only 3-4 research programs will remain active (see SREL Research Programs). SREL's future will hinge on whether investigators can fund themselves in the absence of guaranteed DOE funding and with only minimal support from UGA. Although some programs will move to the Athens campus, it is unlikely that they will continue to have direct (and monetary) involvement with SREL.

(see the Summary page for the events that led to the current situation)

What you can STILL do...

Rep. John Barrow (D-GA) worked extremely hard for SREL. In the end he was unable to get funding appropriated for the lab in the FY2008 budget, in large part due to lack of support from the SC delegation. Please contact Rep. Barrow and let him know that you appreciate his efforts.

Please continue to contact your Congressional delegations for next year's (FY2009) budget.

We thank EVERYONE for the overwhelming support we have received to date. We wish our efforts had been more successful, but we continue to hope for better news in the future.
